Luma na iyan!

Old House, Baaoang paboritong pananalita ng iilang Pilipinong nakakainis.

Baduy at Badoy

Luma at Basura

    Dear Mayor Erap Estrada,

Grabe kayo hahahaha.

Hay naku, pag trapo, trapo talaga..

LORRAINE, MY LABS: AN OPEN LETTER

    Lorraine my labs,

“Uncle Sam’s Basurera”, has caused quite a stir, hasn’t it? 175 shares, 2,300+ reactions, and a social media shit-storm. You must be proud and just a tiny bit giddy from all that attention spewing your way. Isip Langgam usually skips such inane articles but this one piqued our interest. Little did we know, the title–uninspired as it is–is the only thing going for that convoluted mess you churned out.

Let’s be honest: your article was nothing but a cheap shot at Vice President Leni Robredo. It was hateful, spiteful, and malicious. Oh, you tried your damnedest to justify the vitriol but we are not fooled. As Alanis Morissette once crooned: “We see right through you.”

We see right through you, when you gush about your stately demeanor during international conferences, your zeal to impress, your sense of Filipino pride. We would have admired such noble pursuits if not for the merciless gift of remembrance. Tell us, were you suffused with national pride when you advised the EU to ‘engage in child porn’ instead of destabilising Duterte’s administration? That statement in itself was vulgar; coming from a DSWD official, it was profane, insensitive, and imprudent. You were quick to defend your statement as sarcasm, as if that excuses its vulgarity. But the damage has been done and the international community was unimpressed. It’s too bad your stately demeanor evaporates once you get home and online.

We see right through you, when you puff yourself up with righteous indignation for all those times ‘my country was looked down on and treated with disrespect by those who have subjugated us…’ It’s clear that you see ‘Uncle Sam’ as the evil subjugator and we do understand why. We would have applauded such grandiose show of patriotism, if not for its double-standard. You rage against the US, yet blindly support a President whose allegiance to China borders on treason. Where is this patriotic fervor when China continues to ravage our territories while Duterte lifts nary a finger? Where was this bravura when Chinese vessels conducted an ‘exploration’ of Benham Rise without the knowledge of relevant government authorities? Where is this fury when our fishermen can’t even fish in our own waters? Lorraine my labs, your anger is as misdirected as your patriotism is misplaced.

We see right through you, when you vilify Leni Robredo- and her daughters- every chance you get. Leni Robredo is incompetent. Leni Robredo is ‘Uncle Sam’s Basurera’. Come on, Lorraine, this is low-even for you. Only a hateful, spiteful person would turn something as innocent as picking second-hand furniture into a scheming, insidious act. Recycling is a sustainable way of life and nothing in it is shameful or shameless. It shows progressive thinking, a concern for humanity and the planet, and a humility that recognises our frailties as a species. If there’s anything here that’s shameful or shameless, it’s your seeming ignorance and ‘matapobre’ attitude. You shame the Filipinos who make an honest living out of the ‘basura’ of others. Yes, the poor who you and your President claim to champion. Shame on you.

It does make one wonder: Why such hatred towards Leni? Surely, it’s not envy? Look at you: all coiffed hair and smart dresses and a place at the Presidential table. You got it made! So why do you have this constant need to put Leni Robredo down? Is she a philanderer? Is she a murderer? Did she mastermind a drug war that has so far killed 12,000 mostly poor Filipinos? Is she rude, mean, uncouth? Has she colluded with a thieving family to accord a hero’s burial to its thieving patriarch? Has she condoned this culture of impunity that mocks our rule of law? Has she vowed to fight corruption yet herself amassed and spent ill-gotten wealth? Or is it because she is the antithesis of Digong your labs? We do remember a time when you were a Woman for Leni. What happened, Lorraine?

You need to go deep within yourself and make sense of this unhealthy obsession with the Vice President. It is becoming quite disturbing. It’s a pity because you actually share some likeness, at least on the surface: you’re both women, mothers, and government officials with advocacies. But therein, the similarities end. Because while Leni is all about women empowerment, you seem to relish bringing another woman down. While Leni quietly fulfills her sworn duties to uplift the poor, you shame the poor by shaming their way of life. While Leni bestows grace to the Vice Presidency, you have compromised the dignity of DSWD with your thoughtless and provocative remarks. While Leni does her utmost to protect her daughters from the glare of public life, you have no qualms dragging them into your very public meltdowns. As a mother, shouldn’t you act the adult? Shouldn’t you shield your children- and those of others- from the shit-storm that is social media instead of stirring shit yourself?

We see right through you, Lorraine, when you turn the tables and act like you’re the persecuted one. Quit playing the victim because throughout this sad, sorry tale, YOU ARE THE PERSECUTOR, YOU ARE THE BULLY. Do not cry foul when people react unkindly to your unkindness. Speak your truth with dignity. Elevate your political discourse. Fight your battles above the gutter. That’s how you silence your critics. That’s how you earn respect.

    Until then, with utmost disrespect,
    Isip Langgam

The past few days have been most enlightening on the Filipino state of mind and heart. Of all things, the trigger was “basura” a.k.a. garbage, what people throw away as unwanted excess. When VP Leni Robredo rescued perfectly usable discarded furniture from a Boston sidewalk for her scholar daughter Aika’s flat, she defined the oceanic distance between First World excess and Third World cash shortage.

This attracted a mini-storm of both protest and affectionate support from Filipino leaders once scholars in the U.S. too. What the Vice President of the Philippines did without a shred of the shame her detractors condemned her for turns out to be a resonant note to a mother’s down-to-earth common sense in some of the best Filipinos. Statesmanslike, if you ask me.

      Segundo E Romero:

DIGNITY AND INTEGRITY IN FILIPINO JUNKMANSHIP – If you go around the Philippines today, you will find that ordinary Filipinos are better dressed because of junkmanship. Their homes are also better equipped with secondhand furniture and equipment. Many Filipinos are able to employ themselves and open small businesses because of secondhand tools.

Whatever the snooty among us say, ukay-ukay improves the quality of life of Filipinos. A Japanese friend wondered why many Filipinos seem to be better dressed than ten years ago. It’s not because of the malls that sell expensive firsthand goods, but because of the ukay-ukay. In fact, ukay-ukay is now distributed using karitons that bring it deep into the interstices of poor and informal communities.

“So, buying other people’s trash has become a Filipino way of life. One can say it’s the Filipino way of coping with poor income and poorer government services. Many workers travel from San Mateo and San Jose del Monte to construction jobs in Makati using secondhand Japanese bicycles. Just go to ukay-ukays and you will see how well patronized they are by the poor and even the middle class who seek to make their money get more for them.

I’m an unabashed consummate junkman. I get my excitement from going to Salvation Army stores when I’m in the U.S., and Goodwill Industries stores in the Philippines. I’ve been to ukay-ukay stores in Tarlac, Angeles, Agusan, Iligan, Baguio, and of course here in Marikina. All my bags and suitcases are from ukay-ukay. Even the suits I wear to important conferences in Bello Horizonte, Paris, and Bellagio are from ukay-ukay. It does not make me ashamed of myself. It makes me feel creative, innovative, resilient. It’s the Filipino way. It makes me feel one with real Filipinos.

Needless to say, I’m so proud of my Vice-President, Leni Robredo, who is accused of being a ‘basurera.’ She’s the one who shares the values of her people. Her detractors are woefully off the mark. If using secondhand goods were a crime and a gross insult to the Filipino people, as some perfumed and pompadoured Filipinos without poverty fluency would have it, I’d gladly stand beside her in front of a firing squad. There’s more dignity and integrity in secondhand paid for with honest blood, sweat, and tears than brandnew stolen from public coffers.

Cesar Polvorosa Jr. – THIS TOP OFFICIAL WAS A “BASURERO.” All this fuss about the VP being ‘basurera’ made me remember this top official who was a rising star in the agency I entered after university and now heads said agency. We were in the same department and both went to the same graduate school in Japan for our MA.

Once he related to us that the Japanese staff at the airport asked him about the strange slightly rusty metal contraption he was bringing with him on the flight home. The metal tubes, he explained to them, was a bicycle frame! The Japanese had a good laugh. This Pinoy grad student was bringing on the flight home a used, good for the scrap heap bicycle frame! Bwahaha!

Thinking about it now, I thought that as a ‘basurero’ he displayed the best traits of the Pinoy abroad — practical, commonsensical, unpretentious, hardworking, decent. I thought: these are the traits he carries with him to his top job. (Those who follow me may be able to guess his identity).
Tin Bugayong – Dutertards have twisted values. When has austerity become shameful?

Ninotchka Rosca -ReplytoQuery: People don’t seem to realize that consumerism is the first vice ingrained in the colonized mind. LeSigh. Misplaced pride.
When the criticism is over a non-issue such as re-use of discarded furniture or underspending, I tend to conclude that there’s no issue of consequence to throw against a woman. Pure pettiness. Meanwhile, 12,000 murdered.

      Joel David

During the briefing of foreign students about to enter New York University, we were given a number of valuable tips by the department administrator. One of these was to wake up early on trash-collection day to scrounge for furniture we might be able to use. It was presented as a tradition all students were expected to attempt before buying material they might still need but couldn’t find.

I was able to furnish the room I rented entirely with scrounged furniture, and used the little allowance provided by the Fulbright grant to get a mattress, DOS laptop, and printer. My roommate-landlord, whose family could afford to get him everything he wanted, was able to get a word processor and some nice chairs and a lamp. I won’t make a big deal out of this, except to add that when I was able to afford Ikea furniture a couple of years later, they didn’t last as well as the stuff I hauled off the streets.

Just to add: I’m not a convert to the Leni bandwagon, but I believe in fairness and upholding noteworthy local traditions. When we demean scrounging, we demean the best American and international scholars who study in US universities.

So am I, Irineo. I love Goodwill and Salvation Army and thrift stores … the thrill of bargain. It is a treasure hunt. Malls are overhyped and overpriced.

..“We Filipinos have topped ourselves,” my friend writes. “Since last year, during the campaign and until today, we have been hating one another for our own political choices. But today, it is the world that is hating us.”

This is because Pacquiao fans have been “throwing vile, hate(ful), abusive words via social media” toward Horn, and extending their bile towards his pregnant wife and even their unborn child..

..You only bully the weak? Like what Lorraine Badoy did to Jillian before, yun ha bata vs. Matanda. Yung pambubully niyong lahat na political marketer kay VP Leni, wala kayong pinipili kahit nga po patay di ba, binubully niyo? Remember, Secretary Jesse?

Maraming paraan to fight bullying. Puwedeng gumanti ka at puwede din you ignore them. Yung pinili ni VP yung second one. Pero hindi ibig sabihin nun weak siya. That’s political maturity. It takes strength to be political mature…

Take Badoy’s recent social media assault on Vice President Leni Robredo in which she called her “basurera” after the vice president recalled helping her daughter Aika retrieve secondhand items for her apartment at Harvard University..

“When I attend international conferences, I am at my best,” she wrote in her blog. “Feeling ko nasa Ms. Universe pageant ako. Someone ought to sit this woman down and give her some clue. So give that basurera act a rest, Leni. It sickens.”..

..It’s also worth revisiting Badoy’s scandalous comments on the European Union: “Iyong mga taga-EU, mag-online child porn muna kayo. D’yan naman kayo magaling eh.” (Those in the EU, just engage in online child pornography. Since that’s what you are good at.)..

..if she was looking to impress the hardcore DDS, she could have played into the typical stereotype of Europeans in the eyes of Filipinos: “Itong mga hindi naliligong puti, puro kagaguhan ang pinagsasabi.”..

..Even Badoy’s blog’s title sounds like it was meant as a joke: “Digongmylabs: My Rodrigo Duterte Journal.”..

I learned about this so called one time physician of the year from a comment by Juana at Joe’s.
Andrew said that he is a BBM supporter.

Message to fake Vice President, Leni Robredo:
I (Dr. Eli Alegado) worked so hard in the United States of America to serve the community and earn the highest designation as the 2003 Physician of the Year which was presented to me by the US Congress. It’s a shame to hear that while on your recent trip to Boston, Massachusetts this week, you were going through public waste in hopes of searching for usable items. Furthermore, upon your arrival back to the Philippines you presented yourself to the public as a hardworking and ordinary citizen trying to cope with the struggles of daily living like all other ordinary Filipino. However, by doing such a disgraceful act in the US, you have shamed the Filipino image within the Western Community. You have made all the hardworking and honest Filipinos around the world seem like as if they are all beggars and have no dignity by going through other people’s rubbish. This is an insult to each and every Filipino not only in the United States but also around the world. We are hardworking, dedicated, and honest people. We do NOT pickup the leftovers of other people’s garbage and surely do not go in search of usable items in Public waste bins. Shame on you for putting such a disgraceful and dishonest image to all Filipinos.

Public service announcement: My friend Gang Badoy Capati is NOT Lorraine Badoy. The two are different people.

Gang Badoy Capati has NEVER advocated murder, NEVER spread lies and insults, NEVER supported plundering political dynasties, and NEVER accepted salary paid for by tax payers’ money for a government position given as reward for rabid loyalty to a fascist regime.

Gang Badoy Capati is a social justice advocate best known for Rock Ed Philippines.

(P.S. the satirical use of the surname Badoy is not nice, but within context it is illustrative of a point I want to make, and does not extend to anyone else – what Romano Cortes Jorge is referring to is hashtags that are now spreading, mocking Lorraine Badoy’s surname and making Gang Badoy Capati somewhat sad ) – Irineo
